What Matters Most

It feels like forever since I’ve written anything. Since my last blog, I’ve taken in 3 different fosters. One has been labeled “kennel crazy”, the other a mange puppy, and a mother and her lone surviving pup. I will have all their stories this week but today I wanted to talk about my parents and their dedication to their dogs… I remember our first dog. She was actually a gift from one of my sister’s boyfriends. I was in 7th grade at the time and up until this point my dad had......

That Fear in Your Stomach

Back in September when I fostered, Ziggy the Piggy, a friend of mine and Priceless Pets volunteer mentioned to me that one day she would get a kiss from a “pit bull”. Lynnette is also on the committee for NKCH! She had expressed to me her fear of the breed and would muster up the courage to get that kiss. Well, when the day came, she leaned over to Ziggy and of course he did nothing. She looked at me, smiled and simply said, “next time”. Fast forward 5 months later and her......

George - Pet of the Month - March 2015

George is an 11 year old, beagle/basenji mix. He ended up in the Carson shelter when his previous owner of 5 years lost his home. Through a beagle loving Facebook group he was pulled just hours before he was scheduled to be put down. George’s favorite thing is FETCH! He loves to run and chase balls and frisbees. He has no idea how old he is and can run and play for hours. He behaves very puppy-like overall. He knows the command “go to bed”, learning “sit” and “stay”! George is good......

The Blurred Reality of Pit Bulls

I am not proud to admit that I bought into the frenzy. I read stories about how pit bulls attacked people and that they were inherently dangerous. I knew they were the types of breeds most often used in dog fighting. If I ever went to the humane society, I never went down the aisles in the far back corner, where it seemed they only held the most vicious of dogs. However, when I thought that pit bulls were vicious, evil dogs, with large powerful jaws that could snap at me any......

Dear Fletcher,

As most of you know by now, I’ve become a foster failure for the 3rd time. After almost a year of being a resident of Priceless Pets, he’s found his home with me and my pack. Being away with him for 5 days put me in a very emotional state and when I came back I needed to re-assess how I was feeling after my emotions had calmed down. Even after that, I knew this was the place for him. And as I do when all my fosters get adopted, I write......

Stepping Out

We all have a comfort zone. You know that imaginary bubble in our lives where we feel most like ourselves. We all have one. And the thought of stepping out of it can be a scary thing to do. While most of us are quite happy living in this bubble, staying there also keeps us from opening up our minds and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, having a closed mind makes that “bubble” a cage. As most of you know, I volunteer for Priceless Pet Rescue. They are responsible for some......

There’s a Million Different Ways to do the Right Thing

Between my dogs and the fosters that have come through here in the past 2 and half years, there’s been easily 40 dogs that I’ve worked with. This doesn’t even include the dogs at the rescue that I’ve worked with while they were there. For every “issue” a dog has, there are a million different ways to deal with it. And while I don’t have kids, it seems that parenting is a lot like dog training. Everyone has their own way and if you’re not doing it their way, you way sucks.......

Those Who Do, Do…Those Who Do Nothing, Complain

“You are always talking about saving abused and starving dogs. Don’t you know there are children dying out there?” Since I’ve started animal rescue, I’ve been hearing this more and more. Whether it is in conversation, social media or email, comments like these come up. And I get it, there are starving children, we are in a drought, and there are homeless people out there. In no way am I ignoring these things but that isn’t the path I’ve chosen. I don’t get mad at doctors for not being able to fix......

Looking for Shirley’s Temple

Everyone meet Shirley. Shirley is 2ish years old and is currently in foster with Priceless Pet Rescue. This beautiful dog came to them pregnant and like most pregnant mom dogs, all her puppies found homes and she is still looking for hers. It’s hard to believe such a beautiful Golden Retriever mix is still available for adoption. I’m gonna break Shirley down for you today…. The Good: She is housetrained and listens rather well. She does do well with other dogs and learns very quickly. At first glance, she seems like she’s......

Dangerous Dogs

Last night I was informed that NBC was doing a segment on their 11 o’clock news called, “Dangerous Dogs”. Of course, I had to watch it because I just knew it was going to be about “pit bulls” in some way, shape or form. While it was a segment about the city of Los Angeles not doing their job in keeping strays off the street, it was clearly targeting “pit bulls” as “dangerous dogs”. The first time I watched it I was extremely irritated at the term “lock jaw” being used and......

5 Months Later...

A couple days before Nate and I adopted Sierra, John told us to wait to buy her a collar to ensure we got one that fit her correctly. So, when the papers were signed, and we hopped into the car after a successful Priceless Pets Sunday hike, we decided to take the newly christened Sierra (previously known as Cherry) to PetsMart. The collar Sierra had on was much too big for her – she has an unusually small neck in proportion to her head and body – so we were careful to......

Who I Won’t Foster

Now that I have about a year of fostering experience under my belt I’ve come to realize that I don’t want to foster the “perfect dog”. There is no room here for that kind of dog in my house. You know, the pretty one who doesn’t bark that everyone likes. You know the dog that gets along with every dog that just happened to be dumped at the pound only because their previous owner sucked. Those dogs are not welcome here. Those dogs need to be at Priceless Pets because that’s where......

Adam Ant - Pet of the Month - January 2015

Hi! My name is Adam Ant! I’m a 2 year old chi mix. After spending 4 months at the pound, Priceless Pets, rescued me. I haven’t had the best start to my life. I have a huge scar down my back that they think is from being burned which will probably keep me from having all my hair grow back. Even though I’m safe with Priceless Pets I still get stressed out here and would love a home to call my own. Please go to www.pricelesspetrescue.com if you have any questions about......

It All Started with a Pit Bull

June 3, 2012 – I took in a little pittie who needed a home. I had just received my 6th concussion and my doc kept telling me I needed a dog. Days later I found out this sweet thing needed a home so I took her in. Little did I know she needed me as much as I needed her. I had no idea how to care for her or the degree of discrimination we would face together and she made sure to let me know just how inexperienced I was. We......

The Game Changer

As most of you may or may not know I spent the last part of 2014 looking for a piglet to adopt. I thought I had found the perfect pig. We had already named her Eleanor, Eleanor Rigby, to be exact. Her mom had been rescued from a slaughterhouse. 2 days after taking in this pig, she gave birth to 5 piglets. We went to go meet her and we thought she was perfect. All we had to do was wait for her to get spayed and she was coming home with......

What a Year!

When I first started volunteering with Priceless Pets, all I wanted to do was walk dogs. I did not want to make new friends. I actually wanted to get away from people in general. It was a weird time in my life and all I wanted to do was spend time with these dogs, maybe help find a couple of them a home. However, the more I got involved with the dogs, I found myself getting more involved with the rescue itself. I found myself joining the Pittie Crew. I remember the first......
