LUCY - Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog (i think)

lucy_bl_main-2So it took a whole 2 days for Kurtis’ room to be filled by Lucy. Lucy was rescued off the streets of Mexico as a pregnant mom. She’s around 2 years old and I THINK she’s maybe a hound dog mix? At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. If you adopt her, she can be whatever you want her to be!

When Lucy first came to us, she was a sweet dog. It wasn’t too long before she had her pups (and what cute pups they were!) and like all the mom’s we get, she was overlooked in favor of her babies. As time went on, Lucy started to become stressed. She started getting in fights with other dogs and on top of that she was diagnosed with a staph infection and had to be isolated. Poor Lucy, we couldn’t even socialize her now and she was left alone stressing out more and more every day. Basically, Lucy was a mess. At this rate, Lucy was going to be very hard to place in a home. Most dogs actually do very well at The Orphanage (https://www.facebook.com/TheOrphanageCH), but some dogs get extra stressed and just need to be in a foster or they will never get adopted. The timing on adopting out Kurtis couldn’t have been better. Lucy NEEDED a foster and Kurtis was all but better. The last thing Kurtis needed was to be around another dog that had a staph infection!

lucy_bl_3As I was contemplating my next foster, Priceless Pets, asked if I could take Lucy; the dog with staph infection and didn’t get along with other dogs. Sounds right up our alley! I took Lucy on our weekly Sunday hike before I took her home. She only started a fight with every other dog which was actually better than I thought she would be. All I kept hearing on the hike was, “Good luck with that.” “She’s a mess.” “How’s Penny gonna like her?”

You see, Lucy would be my first female foster and I was curious to see how Penny would handle that. The first day I brought Lucy home, Lucy saw Penny through the gate and barked so loud in Penny’s face that she tucked her tail between her legs and ran. Of course, she loved Elvis. All the girls like Elvis! It didn’t matter too much to me at the time because it’s not like Lucy could be around them too much because of her infection. The mission was to get her better, socialize her and then find her a home.

Lucy was not even at my house for 48 hours before the “crazy dog” started walking perfect on a leash. It was less than 72 hours before she went from barking in Penny’s face to doing the dog version of the “head nod” as if to say, “What’s up? We’re cool now. Sorry for the little outburst a few days ago. I was just stressed out but I’m working on it.”

lucy_bl_5These days, Lucy spends maybe 5-10 minutes in the same room with Penny and Elvis. No, they can’t actually play with them until she’s medically cleared but everyday this sweet girl’s personality shines through more and more. She still needs some work approaching new dogs but its all baby steps! Lucy is actually such a goofball. She’s silly and she looks like, Dug, from the movie “Up”! She hasn’t had an accident in the house and I don’t need to keep her in a crate when I leave. I can leave her in the “foster room” and she won’t mess anything up in there. She will continue to stay here until she finds her forever home. She’s going to make a family VERY happy soon!!

Our environment doesn’t always define who we are. Sometimes, all it takes a little change of scenery to get our guard down. I can’t wait to see where Lucy finds her forever home!
